The Uniting Church Historical Society has launched its new programme of events for 2018. This year’s programme covers at least five events covering a broad spectrum of subjects – from talks on ‘Goldfields Revivalism’ and ‘Mechanics Institutes in Victoria’ to a tour of Melbourne city churches taking place in October, following a similar event held last year. The society, which covers the area of the Victoria and Tasmania Synod, and aims to promote interest in the study and discussion of the Church (including its antecedent churches) through a range of activities including publishing articles and organising lectures, readings and discussions. It also works closely with Synod Records and Archives to collect and preserve artefacts, records, photos and other materials of historical interest. Membership of the society is open to all interested people. An annual subscription costs $30 (concession: $25) which includes the society’s biannual journal, Proceedings, which later this year marks the 25th anniversary of its first publication. Proceedings features articles contributed by lecturers, members and guest writers. The Society works in association with the Archives
of the Uniting Church in Australia (Synod of Victoria & Tasmania)
and its staff and volunteers. The Archives encompasses a large and valued collection of historical documents and objects
from the beginning
of settlement in our States.
It covers the three Churches (Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian) that entered the Uniting Church in 1977.
It is a safe and useful place to donate your papers, photographs, stories and other records.
Most of the historical records are stored off-site, in a secure environment, supported by fees paid for retrieval and access.
A team of volunteers is directed by
the Synod Archivist,
Dr Jenny Bars.
The Archives is always
keen to recruit more volunteers with a wide range of different interests
